Original Portrait of Mary Washington in Fredericskburg VA

Mary Washington Mural at The Virginia Deli

Tanya M. Richey completed an art panel commission for Linda and Allen Freeman in early July 2011.  This ground breaking portrait of Mary Ball Washington is installed on an exterior wall of 101 Williams Street (The Virginia Deli).  Mary Washington looks out to Sophia Street and the William Street bridge welcoming all to downtown Fredericksburg.

There were no portraits of Mary Washington completed during her lifetime but artist Tanya Richey worked from a portraits she was able to find Mary’s family and with journal writings that describe Mary.

This painting is part of an exciting new series by Tanya Richey in which she intentionally features women in her histrorically inspired paintings of Fredericskburg.  Another painting in this series titled Washington’s Women:  Mary, Martha & Betty will be introduced at the First Friday Reception July 1st.
