The Fredericskburg, VA and Frejus, Frace celebrated 30 years of Sister City cultural exchange this year.
French participants traveled from Frejus to America spending two week hosted by Fredericksburg area families.
We hosted Fabean and her mother Paule for a week of thier visit and organized a wonderful reception at The Gallery at 915 for the entire Sister City group. Each of the French visitors recieved a special edition Art Card set of two cards. An skyline portrait of modern day Fredericksburg by Alan Howard and a historical painting of the Burg’s early days by Tanya Richey.
The hard work at Gallery 915 is starting to pay off and there’s a great article in the Weekender section of the Fredericksburg paper today!

I have read that when Thomas Jefferson returned to Monticello he was broke and in debt. When several friends talked to him about the seriousness of this matter his answer was to order more flower bulbs for the garden and more wine. Jefferson brought vines back from France to start vineyards in Virginia, now there are many vineyards in Virginia and a few good wines.

I painted the sky, Old Rag, road, hills and valleys from a sketch I did on the side of the road off Rt. 522. This was then set aside. Later, thinking of the vineyards at Sharp Rock Farm but not having a sketch I painted the vines creeping along the hills. This is a combination of observation and vision.

This is a romantic painting started with white and the primary colors stroked and blended for a light background . First begin with the sky, add clouds and begin a sunset. Close your eyes and envision mountains and valleys and trees, then proceed to build a place in time with shadows and dappled light . There is a time for sketches and thumbnails of values, working out compositions, etc. Sometimes we need to just paint and dream.
